March 30th, 2009

Dear parents and students,

Fourth quarter is here and we are moving quickly toward the end of the year! Today marked the first day of AIMS testing. The kids did AWESOME today so thank you for making sure that they had a great night of sleep, an excellent breakfast, and a ton of snacks! It was amazing watching the students pull out snack from home this morning. Each child was prepared with something special. I also purchased some cereal that the students also ate quite happily. We have the rest of the week off, and then we have the rest of AIMS next week, Monday through Thursday. If anyone would like to provide a class snack during that time, I am accepting donations of healthy snacks such as granola bars, cereal, crackers, and fruit. If not, I will make sure that they have something to munch on each day.

The rest of this week will be devoted to the following:

--In reading, we will be continuing to review and practice comprehension strategies using the class reader, Imagine. During this time, we will also continue to review vocabulary words, prefixes, and suffixes to enhance understanding of student reading.

--In math, we will continue to work our way through chapter 9. The students are learning about percents and how they connect with fractions and decimals. We will end the chapter with a review of multiplication and division, and incorporate decimals into those strategies. The next chapter is a review of geometry, symmetry, and tessellations.

--In language arts, we will begin working on our final “major project” of the year. The students will be writing an autobiography. They will be coming home with some questions about their baby life in the next few days. Please help them take note of vital information and humorous stories about their infant life! It will be fun!

--In science, we will be doing some review work of some of the content we have learned this year in preparation for AIMS next week. We will review magnets and electricity, water, weather, and the scientific method.

The fourth grade is conducting a survey to get some feedback from our parents about the end of the year celebration. Each year, it has been tradition to build and launch rockets on the final day of school. We feel bad asking for additional money at this time due to the economic times and the cost of other 4th grade items. We have built a survey to gather your feedback so that we can begin planning this event. Please click on the link below to take the survey. It should not take much time at all. We value your feedback and want to do something that all parents and students will be able to participate in.

Finally, thank you all for your patience, well wishes, and questions involving my National Board process. I have finished my portfolio and mailed it off! I have one more component to finish, my essay assessment. Now that the process is almost complete, I am redoubling my efforts to use this tool to effectively communicate on a weekly basis with all of my families.

Grades will be updated tomorrow afternoon in conjunction with the graded work folder coming home. I hope everyone has a great week and as always, feel free to touch base throughout the week with any questions or comments that you might have.

Valentine's Week!

Dear Parents and Students,

I just wanted to drop by and share with you some pieces of information that I have shared in class but want to make sure that it gets home to everyone!

Friday we will have a short Valentine’s Day celebration. This will truly be just an exchange of valentines and a small treat and juice box. One parent has already volunteered to send in juice, so if another parent would like to send in a treat, please call me and let me know. Students do not have to participate, however, if they choose to, they must make a valentine for each student in the class. I have sent home a list with each student earlier this week.

Students can create a Valentine Collection Box. We will have two contests on Friday. One contest will be for the most creative Valentine themed box. However, the other contest is for Arizona’s Birthday, which is on the same day! Make a box that celebrates Arizona and you could win a fabulous prize!

Science Fair is right around the corner. Students who participate in science fair in the experiment category will see their science grade go up one entire letter grade on their report card in March! If you need a packet, call me and I can arrange for you to have one sent home. Registration is due on February 16th, so sign up soon!

Missing Work packets were sent home today for students who have, for one reason or another, missed a due date or misplaced an assignment. Completed work is due back by Friday the 13th. I have posted grades this afternoon that reflect the most up to date grades. As work is finished and turned in, I will correct and republish grades to reflect the change. Thanks for any help in this matter at home!

As always, please call or email with any concerns or questions that you may have. Thanks and have a great week!

Happy February!

Dear Parents and Students,

February is here and we are hard at work in room 17. I wanted to drop by and send out a quick note about the upcoming week.

We have been hard at work on our research papers for the past few weeks. Students have been reading and taking notes about their selected topics. Some of the students have even started writing their rough drafts of their body paragraphs. This week, the focus is writing an introduction paragraph for expository writing. We will be looking at examples of introductions from former students, identifying key elements of this piece of writing, and write our own introductions!

We are continuing our math instruction with a unit on fractions and probability. This week will see fraction instruction using pattern blocks and clocks. Chapter Six tests on angles and division will be coming home on Monday. Please take some time to go over this with your child so they understand the mistakes that they made and how to correct. We are also continuing our study of math facts. Starting this week, we will be testing our multiplication facts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. For each set of 5 tests, I will be taking the highest grade and including that grade in the gradebook. Please take some time each night to practice these facts as needed.

I will update the blog later today with the remainder of the content areas.

A Quick Word About My Absence...

Dear Parents,

I discussed with the students today about that fact that I will be gone for the remainder of the week. I wanted to offer an apology as well as an explanation. Wednesday and Thursday are my FINAL days at Arizona High Achievement for All or AHAA. This is a program that I am a teacher leader through which is making a great impact on the behavioral programs that our school offers. At these trainings, I am taking part in the creation of school wide goals and practices that every child at Painted Sky benefits from. I was looking forward to being back at school on Friday when I was asked by Patrick Nelson, Associate Superintendent of Amphitheater District, to attend a local training. This is another great training that will benefit students throughout Amphitheater. I just wish that the timing were better. Please accept my apologies for absence. Please, also realize that I have secured a substitute who was a former school teacher and current parent to a student on our class. She is amazing and I know that your children will be getting a great education for the three days that I am gone this week.

When I return on Monday of next week, we will be returning to our normal posting to the google calendar and the students will continue to blog for the class each day. Thank you for your understanding and patience. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Mr. Walling

P.S Grades have been updated. Those students with missing work due to absences, I will gather all the work missed and get it all to you on Monday of next week.

Students,

Please make sure that you are on your best behavior for Mrs. Mason. I have trust and faith that you are going to be a shining example of what quality behavior looks like for Painted Sky Elementary!! I will miss you and hope that you all have an awesome weekend!

Mr. W.

A Special Letter from PTO

NEW PTO MEETING DATE AND TIME
JANUARY 15TH @ 9 a.m.
Parents, the PTO needs your help!!!
This year the PTO decided to conduct only one fundraiser in the fall. Unfortunately current economic conditions affected the drop in revenues from the fundraiser and our other events, so we are experiencing a significant shortfall in funds. As a result we modified our budget for 2008/2009 adjusting for the loss and are looking for ways to generate funds to support the school. Specifically we are discussing the proposal of a voluntary donation to the PTO in lieu of having to conduct a spring fundraiser.
We have changed our meeting time for January to encourage everyone who is available to attend. We need your input and commitment to help generate a successful plan for the PTO’s future.
The PTO currently provides funding for the following positions and other events which are not listed:
Computer Lab technician $11,530
Campus Monitor $ 3,351
Office Clerk $12,227
Teacher Expenses $12,450
TOTAL $39,558
Funding for these items are in jeopardy and we are proposing a voluntary donation to compensate for the decline in revenues to avoid a spring fundraiser. Painted Sky has approx. 700 families and assuming each family donated $25 this could generate the necessary funding for the remainder of the year. We realize there are families unable to donate and ones that may be able to provide funds in addition to the requested amount. In addition, the Painted Sky PTO is a tax deductible organization 501(c)(3) for IRS purposes and any donation can apply towards your tax liability.
Please attend this important meeting to support Painted Sky for the remainder of the year. If you are unable to attend this meeting please contact a member of the PTO Board with any ideas or comments you have on the proposal by Wednesday so we can have the information for the meeting. We will also be available at the end of the Science Fair Parent Meeting, Thursday, January 15 which begins at 6:00p.m.
Thanks,
Vince Roberts

Friday Blog Post by Devon

Today in school we ended the week with a Friday.
First, when we got to school, we went to the Painted Sky spelling bee. Next, we took a spelling test with this week's words. Then, we toook our math 4 today test. After that we let all our energy escape by taking a recess break. Then, we worked on division and a little bit of fractions for math. Next, we went to lunch and lunch recess. When we got back, we had silent reading and Mr Walling read to us. We packed our bags and went to music and dismissed from there.
Do think music was fun? Did you enjoy drawing during free time? What did you think about today? Post your questions and comments on our class bog!
